Climate change is putting current ecosystems in disarray and threatening lives of millions of poor people, especially in low-lying areas such as Bangladesh where nearly 8,500 square miles and 17 million people could be affected by changes over the next 150 years. The first to suffer from non-sustainable environments are the extreme poor. Deforestation, soil erosion, animal extinction and inaccessible water sources are making it increasingly impossible for the survival of massive segments of the world’s population. For this reason, water development and simple farming techniques are powerful expressions of the ministry of Jesus. The environmental decline many societies are facing today including not even having fresh drinkable water gives increasing meaning to the words Jesus spoke when he said, “I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink.”
